"Private dispute resolution allows people to maintain
confidentiality and resolve their case quickly and economically without
losing control of the outcome." MFD

I have been a member of the Bar of
the
State of Maine since December 1978. I was admitted in the State
of New York in 1976 following my graduation from New York Law
School. During law school I had several jobs which gave me some
valuable experience. I was employed as a claims adjuster by the
Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and The Hartford Group. I next
worked as an investigator with the Kings County (Brooklyn) District
Attorney's Office in New York City while attending law school.
After law school, I accepted a
position in the
New
York State Special Prosecutor's Office (investigating the New York City
Criminal Justice System) as a Special Assistant AG. My family's
roots in Maine stretch back
to the early 1700's, and we came here in the summer when I was a
child. This lead me to apply for a job with the Maine Department
of the Attorney General, and I was hired as an Assistant Attorney
General after I
passed the Maine bar examination. There, I spent several years
prosecuting homicide and
white collar criminal cases.
I started my own law office in
Augusta in
1984, where I have been in private practice
ever since. I am now a partner in the law firm of Dyer &
Gustafson. I have been representing individuals and
businesses for over twenty-five years in private practice. My
cases
and clients have exposed me to almost any type of legal cases one can
imagine, but most of my work has been with the trial courts with an
emphasis on civil, probate and family matter litigation.
Public service has always been
something
I have involved myself in. I have been:
Chair of the
City of Augusta Board of
Zoning Appeals
Member , City of Augusta Board of Education
Chair, Fee Arbitration Panel for the Board of Overseers
of the Bar
Chair, Vietnam and Atomic Veterans Commission
during the McKernan administration
Original Chair of the
Maine Crime Victim's Compensation Board during the King
administration
I am currently
serving as the Chair of the Supreme Judicial Court's Advisory Committee
on the Rules
of Evidence. I
have also served as both Special Counsel to the
Maine Superior Court and as Special Bar Counsel for the Board of
Overseers of the Bar. I am the past Chair of the
Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the MSBA and have also
previously
served as the Chair of the Family Law Section. Also, I currently
chair
the MSBA CLE Committee, which is something I particularly enjoy, and I
present once or twice a year at continuing legal education
conferences.
I served in the United States Army
Intelligence Service in Vietnam and also in South Korea.
I have been married to Nancy M.
Dyer,
Pharm. D., since 1976 and we live in Augusta, Maine and have a
vacation home in Arizona. Our son, Jonathan, is a member of the
Virginia Bar and is practicing in Washington, D.C.
